Ask Cupid is the AI dating coach inside the Amore app, made by Simons Apps, LLC. This page describes how we make clear that Cupid is an AI, and the protocol Cupid follows when someone mentions suicide or self-harm. These protections apply to everyone who uses Amore.
Cupid is an AI, not a person
- Before anyone can chat with Cupid, a notice explains that Cupid is an AI, not a person, that its replies can be wrong and are not professional advice, that messages are shared with our AI provider (OpenAI) to generate replies, and that AI companions may not be suitable for some minors. No message is sent until the person agrees.
- Cupid introduces itself as an AI love coach at the start of every chat.
- Cupid is instructed to say it is an AI whenever asked and never to claim to be human.
- Amore is for adults 18 and older.
Our suicide and self-harm protocol
Every message sent to Cupid goes through these steps:
- Detection: before Cupid replies, the message is checked for suicidal thoughts or self-harm using an automated safety classifier, with a keyword check as a backup. The keyword check also runs in the app if our servers cannot be reached.
- Referral instead of a normal reply: if a message is flagged, Cupid does not give dating advice. Instead it responds with a caring message that refers the person to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, and the app offers buttons to call or text 988 immediately. It also reminds them to call 911 if they are in immediate danger.
- No harmful content: Cupid is instructed never to describe, encourage or provide information about suicide or self-harm. Each of Cupid’s replies is also checked before it is shown, and any reply flagged for self-harm content is replaced with a crisis referral.
- Other safety concerns: if someone describes abuse, threats or feeling unsafe, Cupid encourages them to reach out to someone they trust or a professional.
Privacy
We do not save Ask Cupid conversations, and we never log their contents. When a crisis referral is shown, we record only a yearly count of referrals, with no user identity and no message content. We use that count only for the annual safety report we are required to file. Learn more in our Privacy Policy.
Limits
Automated detection is not perfect and may miss some messages or flag others by mistake. Cupid is not a crisis service, therapist or substitute for professional care. If you or someone you know is struggling, please contact 988, 911 or a trusted person directly.
